In this tutorial, I'll show you how to transform a recycled glass bottle into a pretty spring vase using vellum stickers and decoupage.

Stickers have always been cool, and they come in so many styles that using them in crafts is an easy choice. Vellum stickers, or also known as washi stickers work perfectly for this project.
I also have a tutorial on how to turn stickers into earrings

What are vellum or washi stickers?
If you haven't come across vellum stickers before, they are made from a thin, flexible, and somewhat transparent material, with the image printed directly on their surface.
They usually come in huge packs with a variety of designs. There are also different themes you can choose from. I've seen them on Etsy, eBay, as well as Amazon.
Step 1 - Paint bottle white

Before you start painting, make sure your bottle is clean and dry. If you're using a recycled bottle, like I did, you may have to get some Goo Gone to get any sticky stuff off from removing the label.
After that, use enamel white craft paint to paint all around (you might have to do one side at a time). You'll also likely need to pay attention to your brush strokes to make sure they are even. Then let dry.

Using enamel craft paint gives the paint good coverage with fewer streaks, as glass is one of the surfaces it's made for.
Step 2 - Add vellum stickers

Peel off the backing of the sticker and carefully place the sticker on your bottle. Because the vellum is so thin, it might fold, and getting it on straight can take patience. Smooth out any wrinkles that may have formed.
Depending on how many stickers you want on the bottle, it might be worth it to do a little planning before you start.
Step 3 - Seal it with Mod Podge

Use Mod Podge to seal the stickers and smooth out any little bumps that may have been created attaching the stickers. I chose to use matte Mod Podge.
Step 4 - Attach ribbon around the top of the bottle

If you're using a recycled bottle, it's likely to have ridges from having a twist-off cap. If that's the case, gluing ribbon over the ridges makes it look even nicer.
The ribbon is a nice touch, even if your bottle has no ridges.

I used some crocheted ribbon I had. Experiment with what you have in your stash.
All done!

Just add some flowers!

Project FAQs
Q: Can I wash my decoupage glass bottle?
A: It depends on the sealer you use. If you've sealed it with a regular Mod Podge, avoid soaking it in water—wipe it gently with a damp cloth. Use a dishwasher-safe Mod Podge or an acrylic sealer for a more washable version.
Q: Why is my paint peeling off the glass bottle?
A: Glass is a non-porous surface, so the paint may not adhere well without proper preparation. To prevent peeling:
✔ Lightly sand the bottle before painting.
✔ Use a primer designed for glass.
✔ Let the paint dry completely before applying Mod Podge or stickers.
Q: Can I use any stickers for decoupage?
A: Most stickers work, but vellum stickers blend best with the painted surface for a seamless look. If using regular stickers, apply an extra layer of Mod Podge to seal the edges and prevent peeling.
Q: What if I don’t have Mod Podge?
A: You can make DIY decoupage glue by mixing equal parts of white glue and water. However, Mod Podge provides a smoother, more durable finish and is recommended for best results.
Pro Tips or Alternative Ideas
Try Different Base Colors: While white paint creates a clean and elegant look, try other light colors like pastel blue or soft beige for a vintage feel.
Use Other Transparent Designs: For a unique effect, experiment with napkins, tissue paper, or printable decals instead of vellum stickers.
Make It Waterproof: If you want to use your bottle as a functional vase, seal it with a dishwasher-safe Mod Podge or an acrylic spray for extra protection.
Add Dimension: For a more decorative touch after sealing, consider adding raised embellishments like lace, rhinestones, or gold foil.
Use It for Gifting: These decoupage bottles make beautiful, eco-friendly gifts. Fill them with fairy lights, dried flowers, or homemade bath salts for a thoughtful present!
